We spent a week in Barbados filming the Barbados Celtic Festival. It was really tough working in the intense heat and we had a crazy schedule.. Filming all day then editing together a social media film and uploading it each night. 16 hour days for most of the week. In my spare time I play with my band Bensider, I started writing songs at the grand old age of 42 and still really enjoy it. The weather didn’t quite shine for us that day but it still looks amazing! New Year’s Waltz is a slight departure from Bensider as it is leaning towards the more “traditional” sound of the Highlands. I’m immensely proud of both the song and video for New Year’s Waltz. This one was just great fun! I was pretty nervous turning up at the studios near Maryhill, Glasgow for the shoot, a bit out of my comfort zone without my video kit. The job - stills photographer on the BBC programme ‘NARROW SEA, THE FARTHER SHORE’ with Phil Cunningham. The crew were there for pre-recording musical performances from Phil Cunningham and several musicians that would form part of the programme. Once I arrived I realised that I knew a lot of the assembled musical talent anyway as I’d filmed lots of them during my years of working for the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow, this put me at ease straight away… It also helped that the Studio Director that day was the one and only John Smith, not only a hugely talented creative but part of the family as he is my Uncle. The experience was just great and this shot of Phil really sums up the day for me, loads of fun and amazing music..
